I just read on Yahoo News that today only 11% of Americans look up telephone numbers in the white pages. The % is so small that  regulators are allowing telecommunications companies to stop mass-printing residential phone books. So far New York, Florida and Pennsylvania have approved Verizon’s request to stop printing residential white pages.

How times change. Directory service used to be free. Then, to encourage us to use the phone book, we were charged if we called information too many times. Now phone books are disappearing.

For better or worse, I am in that select group of Americans who still use the white pages to find phone numbers. I always reach for the white pages first.

Hello, my name is Bob and I use the white pages.

It’s hard to imagine but I may live to see the day when only museums have phone books.
